While writing this narrative I thought about who the audience could be aside from my classmates and professor if the public were to have access to this narrative, and I feel like this writing would be most relatable to those who have immigrant parents, come from a household where you grow up speaking your parents language but have to learn English on your own, or to anyone really. I’ve read and heard plenty similar stories to my narrative and you always get the same feeling where you realize how many other people go through the same things you go through, so then sometimes I wonder why when we’re growing up we are the ones making fun of each other for our accents or difficulty in learning a language. This is because we grow up hearing different stereotypes and being put on labels that we forget where we come from and also where our parents come from. When it comes to writing papers or essays for any class I tend to try hard to sound smart or use big words so I can get a better grade, but with this assignment I stayed true to myself. I did not try to sound smart or use certain words so I would get a good grade, I wrote the essay normally as if I were telling it to someone because it was about my struggles and what it was like growing up as someone who had to learn English by herself. I kept a specific structure with my writing where I gave context about myself and family because they were who made me and helped me become who I am today. They helped me with my language journey and because of them I am bilingual. Some of the most meaningful insights I gained while working on this assignment was I never got to talk about my journey so while doing it at first I tried holding back from saying certain things because I felt embarrassed but as I saw people write about their personal experiences and really give us details about their life that also influenced me to be more open about my journey and not feel embarrassed. This isn’t a topic you really talk about with your classmates about how you were in certain classes because you were seen as incapable or not smart enough, so it was definitely something different for me. One of the concepts that has mostly impacted my learning and writing practices is audience, usually I am used to talking about context or the author but this felt as if I had an audience that I was writing it to and that audience was very familiar to me so that’s what helped me be more detailed with what I was talking about in my narrative. It also felt like a conversation which made it way easier to write. This assignment has helped me make progress in my writing and learn and practice my skills because it wasn’t about formality or research but more about personal experiences where you got to express yourself how you wanted while maintaining structure.
